Encaustiek/Encaustic
Encaustiek komt van het Griekse woord enkaio dat 'inbranden' betekent. Encaustiek is een van de alleroudste verfsoorten en was al in de Oudheid bekend bij de Egyptenaren en de Grieken. Het wordt gemaakt door pigmenten te vermengen met gesmolten bijenwas. Deze was stolt onmiddellijk door afkoeling. De kunst is nu om de verf op de juiste temperatuur te verwerken. Daarvoor zijn allerlei mogelijkheden, maar het allermooiste is toch nog altijd hét gereedschap van de schilder: het penseel.
